Contrary to the statements we have found on numerous websites, a
cropped ear does not have any benefits over the natural ear; the care for both
is the same. The cropped ear requires much more attention during the healing
process, and the surgery does not guarantee an upright and correct standing ear.
Most countries in Europe have abolished ear cropping and
consider it animal cruelty. On top of it, you are not allowed to show a dog with
cropped ears or docked tails.
We ourselves feel that our dogs should not be exposed to the
risks of this procedure, no matter if companion or show dog. The dog benefits
from nothing out of what is, after all, cosmetic alteration to appeal to the new
owner. These procedures
cause pain and distress, and, as with all surgical procedures are accompanied by
inherent risks of anesthesia, blood loss, and infection.
Uncropped Danes
won’t have any health issues with their ears. But they will be saved from these
risks:
reaction to
anesthesia
post-surgery care
and risks (including infections)
post-surgery injury,
such as spinal compression that might arise when the puppy is not held correctly
during the surgery.
We
strongly recommend you search the Internet for more information about tail/ear
cropping.
Consequently, all our future puppies will leave our family with uncropped ears.
Our contract contains a No Crop clause with a fine (donated to the ASPCA), in case the new
owner decides to have the ears cropped contrary to our contract.
So if you are
looking for a puppy with cropped ears, please contact a breeder that does not
oppose to this procedure.
We recently had questions from our
applicants how flexible we are on this subject. We are not flexible at all and
will not veer away from our
No Crop clause
and the fine involved, should applicants crop the ears of the puppy, after they
receive him or her. We hope you understand our point
of view.
Should you still be interested in one of our puppies, please fill out our puppy
application. We will contact you as soon as the application has been reviewed.
